GEICO
Most people know GEICO from the ads. Here's where it actually fits on a hard file, and where it doesn't.
What they are known for
GEICO is best known for personal auto. Its business insurance usually runs through GEICO Insurance Agency or through other insurance companies, depending on the product and the state. That side covers auto, commercial auto, general liability, the business owners policy, professional liability and workers compensation.
When we may consider GEICO
GEICO comes up when we're looking at auto, and sometimes on a small business question. Before you settle on it for a business policy, find out which company actually underwrites that policy. The name in the ads and the name on the contract aren't always the same.
SR-22 filings with GEICO
GEICO describes an SR-22 as "a certificate of financial responsibility required for some drivers by their state or court order." It isn't a separate kind of insurance. It's a form the insurance company sends to the state to show you carry the liability coverage the state requires. Our SR-22 insurance guide explains who usually needs one, and the state pages cover the rules where we write, such as Nevada and Colorado.
On its own SR-22 page, GEICO says it will file the SR-22 with the DMV in your state for you, electronically or by mail. It also files the FR-44, a similar form that Florida and Virginia use for some more serious offenses, with higher liability limits.
GEICO charges a one-time fee when it files the SR-22 or FR-44. It says most states charge a flat fee and some require a surcharge. For that reason the filing fee isn't included in GEICO's rate quote. GEICO also says you won't pay the fee again unless your policy lapses.
The part that catches people is cancellation. GEICO says that if your policy is canceled while you're still required to carry an SR-22, it's required to notify the proper state authorities. GEICO also notes the SR-22 is valid as long as the policy is active. So a missed payment on an SR-22 policy is worth dealing with before the cancellation date.
Non-owner SR-22 through GEICO
GEICO says that if you need an SR-22 but don't have a car, you can get a non-owner SR-22 policy. It describes that policy as liability coverage for when you drive a vehicle you don't own. It usually suits someone who borrows a car now and then and has to keep a filing in place.
Our page on non-owner car insurance covers what that kind of policy usually does and doesn't include. Whether GEICO will write a given driver depends on the record and on GEICO's underwriting.
Where GEICO fits when we quote a rough record
GEICO writes some drivers with a DUI, a suspension or a lapse on the record. So do Kemper and National General. Each company sets its own eligibility rules, so the same driver can get very different answers from each of them.
Our high-risk auto insurance page lays out the situations we see most, from car insurance after a DUI to driving with a suspended license. For a side-by-side comparison, send us the license numbers for every household driver, the court or DMV notice about the SR-22, and your current declarations page.
Good to know before you choose
GEICO doesn't underwrite every business product shown on its site. Some of that coverage runs through GEICO Insurance Agency and through other insurance companies.
