Richard Sweet

Founder of Vantage Point Risk, and the advisor behind the guidance in this learning center. He works with business owners, commercial property owners, and real estate investors on the decisions that protect an asset, an income stream, and a loan.

Richard founded Vantage Point Risk as an independent agency built around one idea: an owner should understand their exposure before they buy, renew, finance, or file a claim, not after. He writes and reviews the agency's learning center personally.

Background

Richard studied mechanical engineering at Oregon State University, with added focus in business, management, and marketing. Before founding the agency, he spent about 25 years in industrial environments: project engineering, mechanical and pneumatic system design, project management, installation and service leadership, operations training, and large capital system development across the wood products and the waste and recycling industries. That work was about operations, risk, and real-world problem solving every day. It is why he treats insurance as part of a broader strategy to protect assets, income, families, and long-term plans, not as paperwork.

What he advises on

Richard works with business owners, commercial property owners, and real estate investors on the decisions that matter before a loss happens. That means how a property is owned and structured, how it is financed and what lenders require, how leases transfer risk to tenants, how a building is valued and insured to rebuild, the catastrophe exposures that vary by state, and what actually happens when a loss hits. The through-line is translating insurance, lender, and lease complexity into plain-English decisions.

How he works

Independent and owner-first. That means representing the client rather than a single carrier, matching each account to the markets that fit the business or property, and being honest about fit, including saying so when an account is better served elsewhere. Richard is involved across the agency: sales, service, carrier relationships, client education, and long-term strategy. The same standard runs through the Learning Center: every article is written to help a client make a real decision, and reviewed before it publishes.

About the learning center

Richard writes and reviews the Vantage Point Risk Learning Center, guidance that runs across business, property, and personal coverage, including the commercial property owner and real estate investor guides. It is general education, not a substitute for advice on your specific situation, which is what a coverage review is for.

Beyond insurance, Richard writes The Vantage Point, his notes on building a better business: direction, marketing, sales, the offer, delivery, and the money.

Outside work

Outside work, Richard's life centers on his wife Rebecca, their son, and their three dogs, Olive, Niko, and Luna. His free time is mostly outdoors: hunting, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and some kind of adventure. He is active in the local business community and has served through Springfield and Eugene Chamber committee work.

Independent, owner-first
