About Vantage Point Risk

Insurance built around real life, not product categories.

The shop, the truck, the rental and the family car usually sit behind the same owner, and three different agents handle them with nobody watching the seams. Vantage Point Risk is an independent agency in Eugene, Oregon, licensed in 12 states, and we look at the whole picture before quoting any part of it.

Is Vantage Point Risk right for you?

If you want the cheapest click-and-buy policy with nobody involved, we are not your best fit, and we will say so rather than waste your afternoon. If you want somebody who compares the market, explains the trade-offs in plain English and answers the phone when something goes wrong, that is the work. Most of our clients came to us after outgrowing an 800 number or a one-company agent.

Independent means we are not owned by an insurance company and we do not carry a quota for one. Vantage Point Risk started in January 2019 as an Allstate agency and we sold that book in June 2021. A single-company appointment limits you to what that company is willing to write, so when it declines a house or prices a fleet out of reach, you have nowhere else to send it.

Today we hold appointments with 86 carriers and specialty markets, and your account only goes to the ones that want that kind of house, building or operation. Working out which of them that is, before anyone fills in an application, is most of what we do. When none of our markets will take a risk, we go find one that will.

Price follows fit more often than people expect. A carrier that wants the business usually prices it better, and on most accounts we review there is stronger coverage available for what the client already pays. We do not write state minimums or trade coverage away to make a premium look smaller.

Coverage also gets scattered over the years, and nobody reviews the whole set until a claim finds the seam between two policies. Certificates, lease requirements and lender endorsements are where those seams usually turn up.

Who writes the policy and who decides the claim

Vantage Point Risk is an insurance agency, which means the company whose name goes on your policy is not ours. A carrier underwrites the risk, files the rates that set your price, and decides what a claim pays. We work the other side of that: choosing which carriers ever see the account, presenting the risk so an underwriter reads it accurately, and building the coverage that is on the policy before anything happens.

The difference shows up on the day something goes wrong. When a claim comes back short, we can document it, escalate it, and put the file back in front of an underwriter or a claims manager, and we do. We cannot overturn the decision, and any agency that tells you it can is selling you something. What an agent actually changes is what the policy said before the loss, and that gets settled months earlier, when the coverage is written.

Buying straight from a carrier gets you one company's answer. That is fine when it happens to be the right company for your house or your operation, and there is no way to know whether it is without asking the others. We hold appointments with 86 carriers and specialty markets, so the comparison happens before you buy instead of after a renewal you did not see coming.

Carriers pay us a commission out of the premium, so comparing several of them costs you nothing on a standard account. On hard-to-place and surplus lines business, where a wholesale market sits in the middle, a separate agency fee sometimes applies. It is on the quote before you agree to anything, and never after.

Day to day it sorts out simply. A payment or a policy change comes to us. A claim can start with either of us. The decision on that claim comes from the carrier, and our claims page walks through which call to make in what order.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Are you an independent agency?
Yes. We are not owned by an insurance company and we do not carry a quota for one. We are an agency, not a carrier, so we place your coverage with the companies that underwrite it.
Does Vantage Point Risk underwrite policies or pay claims?
No. We are an agency. The carrier underwrites the policy, sets the price through its own filed rates, and decides what a claim pays. We choose which carriers see your account, build the coverage that goes on the policy, and push the carrier when a claim decision is wrong.
What areas and states do you serve?
We are based in Eugene, Oregon and most of our work is in the Eugene and Springfield area. The agency is licensed in 12 states: Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and Hawaii. A rental in Boise or a second home in Tucson is the same conversation.
What do you specialize in?
Commercial insurance, personal insurance, and life and health are the three core lines. Seven areas are where we go deepest: real estate investors, commercial property owners, real estate services, contractors, trucking and transportation, professional services, and restaurants and hospitality. We write plenty outside those seven.
How many carriers do you work with?
We hold appointments with 86 carriers and specialty markets, and your situation goes only to the ones that want that kind of account. The full list is on our carriers page.
¿Hablan español?
Sí. Contamos con miembros del equipo bilingües para ayudarle en español.

What clients say

5 out of 5 starsEugene, OR

Richard has been extremely helpful and responsive. I don't really know much about insurance companies so I don't really know if I was saved any money, but he seemed pretty forthright about what I did and didn't need and was a pleasure compared to my experiences dealing with insurance companies directly in the past.

I had a great experience with this company and they actually changed my perspective on insurance companies. I appreciated their turn around time and they never call you with those long annoying insurance questions but email everything. Very friendly people! Richard thank you .
