Your insurance should change when your life changes.

The problem is that many people wait until renewal to mention something that happened months earlier. By then, the policy may have been out of sync for a while.

At Vantage Point Risk, we would rather hear from you early. A quick conversation can prevent a bigger problem later.

The Short Version

Call us during the year when you buy, sell, move, remodel, add drivers, add vehicles, start using property differently, start a home business, rent property, buy a boat or RV, or have a claim question.

You do not need to know whether it affects insurance. That is what we help you figure out.

Call Us Before You Buy Or Sell A Vehicle

Auto changes are one of the most common reasons to contact us.

Call us when:

  • You buy a vehicle
  • You sell a vehicle
  • You lease a vehicle
  • You refinance a vehicle
  • A vehicle changes drivers
  • A vehicle is used differently
  • A vehicle is used for business, delivery, rideshare, or regular work errands

Do not assume a new vehicle is automatically handled the way you expect. Some policies provide limited automatic coverage for newly acquired vehicles, but the rules vary by carrier and policy.

Call Us When A Driver Changes

Driver changes can affect eligibility, pricing, and coverage.

Call us when:

  • A teen gets a permit
  • A teen gets a license
  • A driver moves into the household
  • A driver moves out
  • A child goes away to college
  • A household member stops driving
  • A driver has a ticket, accident, or license issue

It is better to ask early than to find out after a claim that a driver issue was not handled correctly.

Call Us Before A Remodel Or Major Home Project

Home projects can affect insurance.

Call us before:

  • A major remodel
  • An addition
  • Roof replacement
  • Electrical, plumbing, or HVAC updates
  • Structural work
  • A detached shop, garage, or ADU
  • A pool, hot tub, or trampoline
  • A home office or studio buildout

Some projects may increase the rebuilding cost of the home. Others may create temporary construction risk or contractor-related concerns. We can help you review what should be updated.

Call Us When You Move Or Buy Property

Call us if you:

  • Buy a new primary home
  • Sell your home
  • Move to a rental
  • Buy a second home
  • Buy a rental property
  • Move out but keep the old home
  • Let family members live in a property you own

How a property is occupied matters. A homeowners policy, renters policy, landlord policy, vacant home policy, and second home policy are not the same thing.

Call Us Before Renting Out A Property Or Room

Short-term rentals, long-term rentals, room rentals, and informal arrangements can all affect coverage.

Call us before:

  • Listing a home on a short-term rental platform
  • Renting a room
  • Turning a prior home into a rental
  • Renting an ADU
  • Letting someone live in a property you own
  • Leaving a home vacant between tenants

Do not assume a standard homeowners policy is built for rental activity.

Call Us When You Buy A Boat, RV, Motorcycle, Trailer, Or Recreational Vehicle

Recreational vehicles can create liability and physical damage exposures that are not always handled by a home or auto policy.

Call us when you buy or sell:

  • Boat
  • RV
  • Motorcycle
  • Travel trailer
  • Utility trailer
  • ATV
  • E-bike
  • Collector car

We can help review whether coverage should be added, changed, or coordinated with your umbrella policy.

Call Us Before Starting A Home Business

Home businesses are easy to overlook.

Call us if you:

  • Start consulting from home
  • Store business inventory at home
  • Have customers or clients visit the home
  • Use your vehicle for business
  • Run an online store
  • Use detached structures for business
  • Have employees or contractors working from your home

Many personal policies limit or exclude business activity. That does not mean coverage cannot be arranged, but it needs to be reviewed.

Call Us Before Filing A Claim If It Is Not An Emergency

If someone is injured, there is major damage, or immediate help is needed, report the claim right away.

But if the situation is small, unclear, or you are not sure whether it should be a claim, call us first. We can help you think through the next step.

We cannot promise how a claim will affect your rate, but we can help you avoid turning every small repair question into a claim report without understanding the tradeoff.

The Bottom Line

You do not need to memorize what affects insurance.

If something changes with your home, vehicles, drivers, property, assets, or how you use them, call Vantage Point Risk. We will help you decide whether the policy needs to be updated.

What many people don't realize

The part that catches owners off guard

  • You do not need to know whether something affects insurance. That is what we help you figure out.
  • A new vehicle is not always automatically covered the way you expect; the rules vary by carrier.
  • How a property is occupied matters. A homeowners, renters, landlord, and second-home policy are not the same.
  • Call before you cancel or change anything, not after.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked

Is a new vehicle automatically covered?
Not always the way you expect. Some policies provide limited automatic coverage for newly acquired vehicles, but the rules vary by carrier and policy. Call us when you buy, sell, lease, or change how a vehicle is used so we can confirm it is handled correctly.
Do I need to call before renting out my home or a room?
Yes. Short-term rentals, long-term rentals, room rentals, and informal arrangements can all affect coverage, and a standard homeowners policy is not built for rental activity. Call before you list a home, rent a room, or turn a prior home into a rental.
Should I call before a remodel?
Yes. Some projects increase the cost to rebuild the home, and others create temporary construction risk. Call before a major remodel, an addition, a roof replacement, a detached shop or ADU, or a pool, so we can review what should be updated.
Should I call before filing a small claim?
If someone is injured or there is major damage, report it right away. If the situation is small or unclear, call us first. We cannot promise how a claim will affect your rate, but we can help you think through whether to file before you turn a small repair question into a claim.
